A free Todoist alternative for daily and weekly planning
TODO is a free to-do app with a daily pad, a weekly pad and lists, with no paid plan, so it suits people who want Todoist's basics without the 5-project cap on Todoist's free plan; if you rely on labels, filters, a calendar layout or a team workspace, stay on Todoist.
Todoist is a mature, feature-rich task manager. TODO deliberately does less. Here is how the two compare and how to decide.
- Todoist's free Beginner plan allows 5 personal projects and 3 filter views; Pro is US$5 per user/month billed yearly.
- TODO has no paid plan and no cap on lists.
- Both connect to AI assistants through MCP, so Claude or ChatGPT can read and add your tasks.
- TODO is built around a day and a week: unfinished tasks roll over to today automatically.

Who should stay on Todoist
- You organise work with labels, filters and saved views.
- You want a calendar layout, task durations or deadlines (Todoist Pro).
- You need a shared team workspace with many team projects (Todoist Business).
- You already pay for Pro and use most of what it offers.
Who should switch to TODO
- You have hit the 5-project limit on Todoist's free plan and do not want to pay.
- You plan by day and by week rather than by project.
- You want unfinished tasks to move to today on their own.
- You want to run your list from Claude or ChatGPT and keep the app itself simple.

How to move your tasks from Todoist to TODO
TODO has no import button yet. The quickest route uses an AI assistant that can see both apps.
- Connect Todoist to your assistant using Todoist's official MCP server (ai.todoist.net/mcp).
- Connect TODO using the steps on the /mcp setup page.
- Ask: "Copy every open task in my Todoist project Work into a TODO list called Work, keeping due dates and subtasks."
- Check the new list in TODO, then archive the Todoist project when you are happy.
- No assistant? Recreate your active lists by hand and set repeats again; most people only carry over current tasks.
