A Microsoft To Do alternative that plans your day and your week
Microsoft To Do and TODO are both free, so the choice is about fit: stay on Microsoft To Do if you live in Outlook and Microsoft 365, and switch to TODO if you want a separate weekly pad, unfinished tasks that roll over to today on their own, and a list Claude or ChatGPT can manage directly.
Microsoft To Do is a solid free list app tied into Outlook. TODO is a small, independent app built around a day and a week. Here is how they compare.
- Microsoft To Do is free and syncs across web, iOS, Android and Windows; it signs in with a Microsoft account.
- It has My Day, due dates, reminders, steps (subtasks), shared lists and Outlook tasks integration.
- TODO is also free, with a daily pad, a weekly pad and lists, and no paid plan.
- TODO has its own MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT; we found no official Microsoft To Do MCP server, only community-built ones.

Who should stay on Microsoft To Do
- Your tasks start in Outlook: flagged emails and Outlook tasks show up in To Do.
- You want reminders and due dates on your phone and Windows notifications.
- Your work runs on Microsoft 365 and you want tasks next to Planner and Teams.
- You already share lists with family or colleagues who use To Do.
Who should switch to TODO
- You plan the week ahead, not just today: TODO has a separate weekly pad.
- You want unfinished tasks to move to today automatically instead of piling up as overdue.
- You do not want your to-do list tied to a Microsoft account.
- You want Claude or ChatGPT to read and update your list through an official MCP server.

How to move your tasks from Microsoft To Do to TODO
TODO has no import button yet, so the quickest route is through an AI assistant.
- In Microsoft To Do, open each list you still use.
- Connect TODO to Claude or ChatGPT using the steps on the /mcp setup page.
- Paste the list (or a screenshot of it) into the chat and ask: "Add these to a TODO list called Work, keeping the due dates."
- Set repeats again on anything that recurs.
- Without an assistant, retype only your current tasks; finished ones rarely need moving.
